Publication Note

The Military Terms Dictionary is an online reference tool focused on military history, organization, ranks, administrative structures and document terminology for the period 1880–1918.

The dictionary was compiled during archival work on British military intelligence reports. Entries aim to display the English term, Ottoman or period equivalent, modern Turkish rendering and editorial note together where possible. The purpose is not to produce mechanical one-word equivalents, but to make the historical use of terms visible in a verifiable manner.

The site is currently in beta. Some entries may therefore contain “to be checked”, “pending” or context-dependent notes. Equivalents whose certainty remains doubtful should not be treated as definitive before source and context verification is complete.
